Design in Virtual Reality
We’re constantly exploring new ways to improve our design process and found that Virtual Reality is a powerful tool for us designers to create and visualize our ideas. Using programs like Gravity Sketch and KeyVR, we’ve learned to take full advantage of this new technology and incorporate it into our daily design process.
This sample project was primarily created using Gravity Sketch as an ideation and surfacing tool. By being able to quickly create 3-dimensional drawings, we can ensure that our designs will be ergonomically feasible and package any necessary components. These 3-dimensional sketches also allow us to explore new design ideas that we might not have otherwise thought about in a 2-dimensional format.
After a few rounds of quick rough sketches, we can refine our design by carefully building a wire-frame structure that will drive the construction of surfaces for our vehicle. Thanks to Gravity Sketch’s user interface, the creative process is intuitive and powerful enough to allow multiple users to be in the same virtual space as well as export curves and surfaces in multiple formats.
After exporting data from Gravity Sketch, we can then bring the data into our CAD packages and refine surfaces for prototyping and rendering. Our overall design experience has been streamlined and going from a 2D sketch to a 3D design is much quicker and intuitive.
